Preparing the Parking Lot

By nine in the morning on Father's Day, June 20th, volunteers for the main event were already setting about the task of preparing the parking lot outside the Manchester Library. Tables, chairs and boxes of supplies were ferreted out of the hollows in which they are stored the rest of the year and arranged to form a serving line and a comfortable dining area, complete with checkered table cloths and condiments.

By ten, most people found themselves sorting through boxes of canopy parts, figuring out which were legs, which were gable pieces, and which belonged to a different sort of canopy than the one they were working on. With a little intuition, humor and teamwork, they had the dozen or so canopies worked out in short order to shade the serving line, dining area and stage.
