MCA Kids' Mini-Carnival

The Manchester Community Association stepped in for the first time this year, supplementing the library's usual salmon dinner and book sale with a Kids' Mini Carnival.

Among the activities offered at the carnval were a fishing pond (with prizes as 'fish'); several tossing games, including one involving bean bag fish and a bear and one in which kids tried to knock a pyramid of bottles down with a baseball; a duck pond; a guessing game and more. Fun was had by young people of all ages, and we estimate that most of the kids who came to the salmon bake dropped by the carnival, too.

The MCA contributed a Kids' Mini Carnival this year because we felt that fathers might want a little time to sit down with their dinners, relax in the company of other adults, and watch their children have a grand old time from a short distance for a little while on Father's Day.

During the Carnival, we also got some great pictures of a few of the kids who dropped by. Take a look -- you might be featured!

Chess Master Will

One of the Carnival's more popular activities was this game booth run by Chess Master Will Fugat, who played up to three games of chess at a time against any opponents looking to test their skill. Several kids stepped up to the plate, and solid thinking and excellent sportsmanship were shown by all. Thank you, Chess Master!

MCA Blanketeer Challenge / Voter Registration

Alene and Shirlee manned the MCA's Project Linus Blanketeer Challenge booth. Project Linus is a non-profit organization named after Charlie Brown's blanket-toting friend Linus. They collect home made blankets for local children in trauma. The MCA is running a blanket drive, hoping to solicit a boxload of blankets to be donated to the organization on behalf of our community at the September 11th Freedom Fighters Challenge triathlon. (Click the links for more information on the Blanketeer Challenge and the Triathlon! We need help with both.)

These two generous volunteers also contributed a non-partisan voter registration booth to the carnival, signing up several young people to vote in their first presidential elections this fall.

Friends of the Library Book Sale

As usual, the Friends of the Library opened their book sale with some special offerings during the salmon bake. We hear they did a brisk business. (Dee, our friendly head librarian, is visible on the left in this picture.)

Manchester Library

Throughout the day, the Manchester Library itself remained open for business, offering peace, quiet, and cooler temperatures to patrons taking a break from the excitement outside.
