Manchester Community Schedule of Local Events

September 11th Triathlon

The Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee is planning a triathlon event for military, fire and police personnel in the area.  They will have over 200 participants, with 70 teams running, kayaking and biking from Port Orchard to Manchester and back.  It will be a huge event with thousands of spectators and full media coverage, and they are hoping to make it an annual event.

This will be an incredible opportunity for Manchester!!  The exposure for our community will be terrific – not only on the day of the event, but all summer long as the athletes come through to practice the course.  It will be great for our local businesses, who may want to consider offering a small discount to the registered participants, which might encourage them to use our services while they’re here (and to keep coming back).

We’d love to see all the members of our community down at the waterfront on morning of September 11th - cheering on the racers and showing our support and patriotism.  Stay tuned for more details…

MCA Events

The MCA has some fun events on the planning table.  We are working on bringing the community…

*      A Manchester Bunny Hop Easter event on April 11th

*      A Mother’s Day Brunch on May 8th

*      A small carnival during the Friends of the Library

*      Salmon Bake in June

*      The Manchester Festival in August

*      September 11th Triathlon Festivities in Manchester

Here are some of the details – watch this space for more information on these events as the plans develop….

Manchester Bunny Hop

It’s official – the MCA will be hosting a Manchester Bunny Hop on Saturday, April 10th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Manchester Library Meeting Room.  There will be games and prizes, crafts and activities, snacks, and of course an Easter Egg Grab!  Prices will be in the 25-50 cent range for the games and eggs with prizes in them. Other activities will be complimentary, though donations will be gladly accepted.  All school-age kids are welcome!

“Mayor of Manchester

Yes folks, we’ve decided it’s time to buy us a Mayor!!  So with tongue planted firmly in cheek, we have a few candidates who are going to start soliciting votes.  Votes will cost the good people of Manchester 25 cents a piece, and we encourage you all to vote early and vote often!!  You will start seeing coin boxes (or cans, jars, whatever) around town where you can drop your quarters in to help your favorite candidate.  We may even get the candidates to do a couple of personal appearances at our upcoming events to tell you themselves why you should vote for them.  We plan to announce the winner at the Salmon Bake in June – and who knows – we may just impeach him/her at the Festival in August!  This is a fundraiser folks, and proceeds will go toward the bigger events that we are trying to bring to the community. Anyone can run – just get out there and start stumping!  And let us know about it - we will keep a “score card” on the website.

Mother’s Day Brunch

The MCA will also host a Mother’s Day Brunch.  Pastor Liz at the Elim Lutheran Church as graciously offered their facilities for us to use on Saturday, May 8th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.  This one is open to the whole community (not just Moms!), so plan on coming out and having brunch with some of your neighbors.  We will be pre-selling tickets in the weeks before this event, and tickets will be available at the door as well.

Welcome to Manchester Sign

The “Welcome to Manchester” sign (at Colchester and Miracle Mile) is showing it’s age and needs some repairs.  This sign was donated to the community long ago by the Tavern, and we (the community members) need to take care of it.  Are there any volunteers out there who might be able to help straighten it out and/or repair it?  We would ALL greatly appreciate it!

New Feature

The Manchester Community Association is proud to support our local businesses.  Each month we will be highlighting a different business and it’s owner, so the community members will have the opportunity to get to know them.  These business profiles will all be kept on a new section of our website that will be devoted to promoting our local businesses.  This month we’re getting to know Teresa Godfrey at Mama Java – a very comfy little place to stop for an espresso and some conversation – located right on Main Street in Manchester.

If you or someone you know has a business in Manchester (even if it’s home-based), please contact Arlene at 769-9179 or arlobren@hotmail.com with the details so that we can add you to our new business listings on the website.  We’re hoping to have a complete business directory for Manchester up and running soon.  Thanks for your help with this!

The new espresso shop in Manchester features high quality coffee drinks and chai.  The modern and comfortable furniture invites you to stay and try one of the wide variety of flavors with your next latte.

Come by motorcycle, and Teresa (the owner) will spontaneously love you!  Non-motorcyclists also experience a warm welcome and often stay for a little chat with Teresa.

A little about Teresa…

I set out to study deaf culture, American Sign Language and psychology at the Seattle Central Community College. When my mother suddenly passed away in June 2003, I had a change of heart about my career.  Soon after, I opened a coffee shop in Manchester to found a lasting memory of my mother.  The business was named accordingly – Mama Java – and shows my mother’s favorite flower, the plumeria in the business logo.

I have many hobbies, including motorcycling, which most of my customers know, as I commute on my 2003 Triumph Bonneville America as often as possible!  I also like scuba diving, traveling, the theater and opera, Djembe drum, golf, reading, music, swimming, camping, hiking and bonfires on the beach.  Spending time with my partner and my three dogs also takes a high priority in my life.
