Manchester Community Association Newsletter

JANUARY 2004

We will be sending you an 'issue' about once a month with news of the community and the MCA (that's Manchester Community Association NOT the Manchester Christian Academy).

Welcome, New Members!

MCA welcomes three new members this month, Louis King, Arlene Rebelowski and Carol Reddeman. Thanks for joining and thanks for your interest in your community!

MCA Events This Year

The MCA has some fun events on the planning table. We are working on bringing the community .....

Further details regarding these and other events in the works will be presented as they are available. All of this is still in the planning stages and events can be canceled if there is not enough interest generated. Please make sure you visit our web site for updates. If you have any suggestions or questions on the proposed events, please let us know.

MANCHESTER CHOIR

Enjoy singing? Louis King, one of our newest MCA members, will be forming a Manchester choir group this year. No experience or formal training is necessary. You just need to enjoy singing. Men, women and children are welcome.

If there is enough interest in forming a singing group there will be two groups, one for the people under 30,t he other for people over 30.

The whole purpose of forming a Manchester choir would be, first the enjoyment of singing in a group and secondly performing at Manchester festivals and events, parades, farmers markets, etc.

Probable practice times and time involved singing will be about once every two weeks or so to get started.

For more information please contact Louis King via our Manchester Choir Web Form.

LITERARY LATTE PROGRAM

Beginning January 15th the Kitsap County Library system is kicking off their "Literary Latte" program this month which is better known as the Adult Winter Reading Club. The program will go until April 24th.

This is the first time the Kitsap Regional Library has had a program for adults ONLY. You have heard of the Summer Reading Program for kids. This is almost identical.

All you need to do is pick up an entry form and sign up at any Kitsap library. There is an online form, too. You must have an active library card and be 18 years old or older to participate.

Then, just read 5 books between January 15th and April 24th, fill out the entry form and return it to the library. This earns you a coupon for $2.00 off a "literary latte" [or any drink] from Manchester's own Mama Java Espresso - given to you by library staff when you return your form. It also gives you one chance to win the goodie basket!

PLEASE NOTE: The Mama Java coupon is one per patron and while supplies last. If you read an additional 5 books you will be entered into the drawing but will not receive an additional coupon. See the ladies at the library for more information.

If one of your five books is "outstanding", in your opinion, then place a check mark next to it (a place is provided). The form is also your entry into a Grand Prize drawing for a "book-lovers" basket full of goodies. The basket of goodies is on display at the Manchester Library.

What is an outstanding book? An outstanding book is any book that the patron/reader decides is one. No one else (including us library people) make that choice. The reason for this is that reader's cross all boundaries and tastes. The library system wants to use these checked or chosen items to make a list to give to interested people when the program is over. Libraries make lists but the lists made from libraries is a personal opinion of that person or, for example, the book editor from the Washington Post, Seattle PI, etc. This time the list will be from REAL people. Ordinary folk to share what they thought was a good read.

Here's what you need to know:

  1. You can read any book. [Does not have to be a library book.
  2. You can enter as many times as you want. [Every 5 books = 1 entry]
  3. You will earn only one coupon at Mama Java's
  4. You must be over 18 to participate
  5. You must have an active Kitsap County library card
  6. Grand Prize winners are eligible to win at only one library branch. All of this information is available on the KRL website.
