Manchester Community Association Newsletter
JUNE 2003

We will be sending you an 'issue' about once a month with news of the community and the MCA (that's Manchester Community Association NOT the Manchester Christian Academy).

MANCHESTER FESTIVAL

It's a GO! The Manchester Festival will be on August 16th, a Saturday, and will coincide with the Friend's of the Library book and plant sale.

The focus of this MCA event will be a swap meet meets a farmers market meets a craft sale meets a children's carnival. In addition to people selling their wares we'll have balloons and kids games, possibly a big raffle item, food and drinks and kids' activities. There is also a rumor that there will be a children's parade again so start shining up those bikes and wagons!

The MCA welcomes anyone wanting to come down and sell their craft items, garage sale items or produce as well as fund raising organizations. Spaces available will be limited so it's first come is first served.

Spaces will be roughly 9 x 17 and will rent for $10 for a space, $15 for electricity. There are a few spaces available that will have electricity available. Only limitations are no prepared food items, no firearms or other weapons, no live animals and no adult or drug related items.

Those interested in renting a space can contact MCA President Brian Moore at brian.moore@charter.net or mail your payment to the address listed at the bottom of this newsletter.

NEW LIBRARIAN

The Manchester Library has a new head librarian! Drop in and welcome D. D'Heam to the neighborhood!

ALSO AT THE LIBRARY
~~~
The Manchester Library's Plant Sale is the same day, same location as the Manchester Festival. There's nothing confirmed yet but there are rumors that Barnaby Bear will be making an appearance!
STOP SIGNS & CROSSWALKS
In case you haven't noticed...and from the way some drivers blow through downtown Manchester, you haven't... there is a new stop sign and crosswalk in front of BJs Deli. Not everyone coming out of the boat launch area or the store has noticed the sign and some aren't stopping. Just be aware of that when you're using the new crosswalk.
TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENTS
Bud Larsen has been working on getting the three way stop next to Island Hair Salon made into a 4 way stop. If you're coming into Manchester off of Beach Drive it is hard to see down the hill for on-coming traffic that doesn't have to stop. If you're interested in supporting that plan please contact Bud Larsen at budlwanlars@msn.com or 769.8793.
BLOCK WATCH PROGRAM
The Block Watch program in Manchester is going well -- well enough that we've got a Block Watch sign posted at the end of Colchester. Daniels Loop and Sitka Court still need block captains. If you're interested please contact Bud Larsen at budlwanlars@msn.com or 769.8793.
PRACTICAL SAFETY TIPS
  1. Lock your doors and window whenever you leave your home. Even if it's for just a short time.
  2. Make sure your street address is clearly visible from the street in case of emergencies.
  3. Engrave your property with your driver's license number and maintain a record of your belongings.
  4. Use effective deadbolts on doors and additional locks on your windows.
  5. Use timers on your lamps and radios when you are gone to make your home look occupied.
  6. Light your front and back entryways at night.
  7. If you park outside make sure you park in a well-lighted area.
  8. Keeps tools and ladders secured so they can't be used to break into your home.
  9. Have a trusted neighbor keep a copy of your key. Don't hide one outside.
  10. Have a friend or neighbor pick up papers and mail to make your home look lived in while you're on vacation.
  11. Always remove the keys from your ignition, roll up the windows and lock the doors of your vehicle.
  12. Never leave valuable items in plain site in your vehicle.
BE SAFE RATHER THAN SORRY!
