Service Projects -- Project Linus

MCA Blanketeer Challenge!

The MCA challenges you to join us between now and September 11th in making home made blankets to be distributed through Project Linus to local kids in need. We have launched the Blanketeer Challenge as a way for Manchester to make a real contribution to our community on September 11th, a day of remembrance. To a child who has lost his home in a fire or an infant in intensive care, the tangible presence of their very own home made blanket can bring immeasurable comfort. Providing Project Linus with blankets also supports the police and fire fighters competing in the September 11th Freedom Fighter Challenge triathlon in their work with local children.

Challenge details:

  • No blanket-making experience necessary
  • Any style is welcome, from afghans and quilts to no-sew fleece blankets
  • All donated blankets go to local children (ages 0-18), often via nurses, police, fire fighters and social workers arriving on the scene of a crisis
  • Making a Linus blanket is a great way to learn a new craft
  • Put left--over yarn and cloth to great use this way
  • Free patterns and 15% yarn discounts are available through local merchant The Needleworks Company of Port Orchard

How to turn the blankets in: The official collection point for Blanketeer Challenge blankets will be a donation box in downtown Manchester on September 11th, though we will also be glad to make other arrangements as necessary.

About Project Linus: Anyone who knows anything about Charlie Brown is probably familiar with his friend Linus, and the old blanket that brings Linus solace through difficult times. Project Linus is a non-profit organization named in honor of Linus and his famous blanket. The organization is run entirely by volunteers, who strive to provide children around the world who are suffering from illness, trauma and other hardships with the warmth and comfort of a home made security blanket.

Why September 11th? On September 11, 2004 Manchester will have the honor of being a stop on the Freedom Fighter Challenge triathlon. This event honors the noble members of their professions who lost their lives on 9/11, and those who continue to strive and sacrifice in defense of our safety and freedom. The MCA will be on hand to support the athletes and honor Patriot Day.
