The Manchester Festival has come and gone for another year, and this was the most successful one ever!  We had a great turnout from the community and were able to raise enough money for the MCA to fund the next few events.  Thanks to everyone who helped put on this fun event - and to all of you who came out to support it.

The pulled-pork sandwiches at the BBQ were a huge hit (as always), and the kids all had a great time at the carnival booths.  In addition to these MCA-sponsored booths, we had 27 local artists and entrepreneurs on hand for the festivities.  There were hand-crafted toys and models, lathe-turned bowls, jewelry, hats, scarves and blankets, home made candles, lotions, and bath products, crafts made by local artists, crafts demonstrated on-site, and even a masseuse and acupuncturist !

The Manchester Community Association would sincerely like to thank everyone who helped put on this event.  We had wonderful support from so many people - friends, family and local businesses - we couldn't have done it without all of them.
Please
take a moment to to see who our sponsors and volunteers were - and be sure to patronize their local businesses when you can!

and acknowledgments.

Here's a note we received from one of our vendors, which really shows why we put on this event (Thank you Andrew & Tian!).....

It was a pleasure and an honour to receive an invitation to attend the festival as a practitioner, and just plain fun to spend the better part of a day in that tiny, but charming little place called Manchester. 'Twas wonderful to share some knowledge, conversation, and more than a lot of smiles with everyone at the event. We look forward to seeing you all again.

Best wishes,
Andrew & Tian Long  Acupuncture*

The Manchester Library and the Friends of the Library had three booths at the festival as well....

#1  Friends of the Manchester Library made over $500.00 in support of the library on Saturday alone.  That was on an unadvertised book sale, the trunk raffle & the quilt raffle.  The winner of the trunk raffle was Juliet Geyer
who came down to the library to claim her prize on Tuesday. She had purchased
only "a couple" of tickets. She and her family have long attended the annual salmon bake, and she was delighted with her prize.

#2  The Children's Booth attracted many children both for the craft and for the story time.  The kids loved Barnaby Bear who not only led the parade but stuck around for the story of how the chipmunk got its stripes.

#3  The Kitsap Regional Library Manchester Branch booth was emphasizing registering voters and getting people to sign up for library
cards.

The hottest item, however, continued to be guessing how many marbles were in a
jar. It was a guessing game that began when school let out and ended on August 31st. At this time we have gone through all the entries (335!) and found *four* winners. Guesses ranged from 101 marbles to 10,000.  The correct answer was 700!

The Manchester Library also had 415 visitors on that Saturday and many had never been in the library before.  The community event brought them in!

The Rapsody Team would like to thank Manchester residents and Park Commissioners who allowed the riders to have their rest stop at the Waterfront Park. Over 450 riders rode through the area on Saturday and Sunday and remarked what a beautiful, peaceful place it was!  They especially liked the food and the band.  Lot's of fun was had by all!  The Rapsody Ride will be held again next year, the last weekend in August.

Unfortunately, this event has been cancelled.  It turns out that there was too much competition from other conflicting, similar events in the region.  The organizers hope to be able to bring this event to Kitsap County next year.

The "Blanketeer Challenge" to support Project Linus is still on for 9/11/04.  Our own Anne Cisney, who has coordinated this event, will be collecting blankets near the Veteran's Memorial in downtown Manchester on the morning of 9/11.  For anyone who can't make it that morning, Jillene at Go Figure! will also be accepting blankets at any time during her regular business hours.

Many thanks to everyone involved in this very worthy cause.  Please click here for more information about the Blanketeer Challenge and Project Linus.

Many people have asked about the money that we raise at the MCA-sponsored events, like the Manchester Festival.

The Manchester Community Association is a small group of people volunteering their time to bring the community a few fun events each year.  We rely on the membership dues to help us fund these events, plus whatever money we make at the events themselves.  Most events are small (like the Bunny Hop and the Manchester Halloween events for children), and don't really make any money.  The Manchester Festival is our one "big" event of the year where we do a little more than break even!

So where does this money go?  Aside from funding future events, our goal is to get enough of a surplus so that we can start offering a few small scholarships to our members.  Unfortunately, that goal is probably still a few years away, since we have the burden of a prior debt to pay off first.

The current board of the MCA inherited a debt from the 2001 fireworks display that we are still trying to pay off.  It seems the sponsor for that event failed to donate the promised funds and the MCA was left holding the bag.  Since we only make basic operating expenses from the membership dues, we are really only able to make occasional payments on this debt.  We plan to make a $700 payment with the proceeds of this year's festival.  This will bring our balance down to $3,000.  Yes, it's a lousy situation, but we're stuck with it, so we will keep pecking away at it until it's paid.

Meanwhile, every little bit helps, and we really appreciate the community support at these events, as well as the membership dues.  If you are not currently a member of the MCA and would like to join, click here to print out our membership application form.

Thanks for your support!
