Service Projects -- Project Linus
The Freedom Fighter Challenge is sponsored by the South Kitsap Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with local military, police and fire fighting units, as well as other local businesses and organizations.

When: September 11, 2004

What: A Military Tri-Athletic Event

This is the first annual event established in Port Orchard to honor the Military, Law Enforcement and Fire Fighters who defend our way of life through their sacrifice and dedication. The event is composed of a run, kayak race and a bicycle race.

Where: South Kitsap Community Park

The event is scheduled to start and finish in South Kitsap Community Park. The route of the race will take contestants through beautiful South Kitsap County and into Port Orchard. Games, food and attractions will be established in the park for the families and others who come to cheer their favorites on.

Why: To give our Defenders of Freedom in uniform and their families a day of their own in Port Orchard.

The event is being established to give our defenders a forum to compete with each other and with the other branches of military service, law enforcement and fire departments throughout the region. This dark day in our history has been chosen to honor those who defend us from our enemies, and to give all of us a day to remember individuals lost by the hand of those who would have us hide in fear of what tomorrow will bring.

The Event: The Freedom Fighters Challenge Race

  • September 11th Remembrance Ceremony, South Kitsap Community Park
  • A run from the Park to the pier in Port Orchard
  • Kayaking from Port Orchard to Manchester
  • Bicycling from Manchester back to South Kitsap Community Park
  • Awards Ceremony & Celebration in the Park

The Challenge Race is a relay. Teams will be composed of three people, one for each leg of the race. This format was chosen to exhibit team work as well as athletic ability.

The event's final details can be obtained by contacting the Port Orchard, South Kitsap Chamber of Commerce at 360-876-3505.
